Everything you need to know about exporting vehicles from Germany — deregistration, documentation, shipping methods, and destination requirements.
Complete Guide to Vehicle Export from Germany
Exporting a vehicle from Germany involves several critical steps. This guide walks you through the entire process.
1. Vehicle Deregistration (Abmeldung)
Before a vehicle can be exported, it must be deregistered in Germany. This involves:
- Visiting a registration office (Zulassungsstelle)
- Surrendering the license plates
- Obtaining an export certificate (Ausfuhrbescheinigung)
- Getting a short-term export plate (Ausfuhrkennzeichen) if the vehicle needs to be driven
2. Required Documents
- Vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugschein / Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I & II)
- Export certificate from the Zulassungsstelle
- Passport or ID of the owner
- Purchase invoice (if recently purchased)
- Customs export declaration (Ausfuhranmeldung)
3. Shipping Methods
RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off)
The vehicle is driven onto the vessel. Most cost-effective for single vehicles.
Container Shipping
The vehicle is secured inside a container. Offers more protection and is ideal for high-value vehicles or multiple units.
4. Destination Requirements
Each destination country has its own import regulations:
- Age restrictions on vehicles
- Left-hand vs right-hand drive requirements
- Import duties and taxes
- Pre-shipment inspection requirements
5. Insurance
Marine insurance is strongly recommended. We can coordinate insurance coverage through our partner network.
6. Customs Clearance at Destination
The consignee (receiver) at the destination is responsible for import customs clearance, duties, and registration in the destination country.
