Learn the difference between Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) shipping, and which is right for your cargo.
Understanding Container Shipping: FCL vs LCL
When shipping cargo in containers, you have two main options: Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL).
Full Container Load (FCL)
FCL means you book an entire container for your cargo. The container is sealed at origin and opened at destination.
Best for:
- Large shipments that fill most of a container
- Cargo that needs to remain sealed and secure
- Time-sensitive shipments (faster than LCL)
- Cargo that could damage other shipments
Container sizes:
- 20ft: ~33 cubic meters capacity
- 40ft: ~67 cubic meters capacity
- 40ft High Cube (40HC): ~76 cubic meters capacity
Less than Container Load (LCL)
LCL means your cargo shares container space with other shipments. You pay only for the space you use.
Best for:
- Small shipments (less than ~15 cubic meters)
- Cost-conscious shipping
- Flexible timing
Key Differences
| Factor | FCL | LCL | |--------|-----|-----| | Cost per CBM | Lower (if filling container) | Higher | | Transit Time | Faster | Slower (consolidation) | | Security | Sealed container | Handled at consolidation | | Min Volume | Whole container | Any amount |
How to Choose
- Cargo volume > 15 CBM: FCL is usually more cost-effective
- Cargo volume < 15 CBM: LCL is usually cheaper
- Urgent shipment: Choose FCL
- Budget priority: Compare quotes for both
